In the blink on an eye, summer is over and the first day of school is almost here! First day’s can be scary, especially when your little one is starting primary school for the first time. Their tiny feet may take little steps, but this is one big leap for them and you. To help out, here are some top tips to help get everyone in gear for that big day.
Curbing any nerves for the first day is all about creating safe and nurturing environments for your kiddies to excel in. Therefore preparing you and them is the best way to tackle any ‘scary’ experience the little one may face.
Creating a Routine
The first day is synonoumous with a routine switch up. So, our recommendation is to start establishing their new routine from before. Children love predicability, as it causes them to have less things to worry about navigating. So, one of our big tips would be to start practising their school schedules from before. This could include wake up, eating, bathing and bedtimes for a school friendly schedule. Allowing your kiddies to get into the groove of things before Day One of school.
Reading Time
Reading for your child’s education is always a plus, but sharing particular stories where the characters are starting school themselves is a great way to familirise your little ones with their first day. Having their favourite characteres experience the same feelings as your child on their first day gives a sense of comfort and allows your child to have somewhat of an idea around their first day themselves. This is also a great opportunity for them to ask any questions they may not have asked prior.
Practicing Independence for the First Day
Just like adults, confidence is a superpower for your little one, and they could definitely use all of the confidence they have. By practicing their independence, for activities such as getting dressed, opening their lunchbox (pesky little things sometimes!), or even using the toilet can boost their confidence like no other. First day jitters will be nothing when your child manages to navigate through their day!
Meet & Greets
Removing any first day scaries is always a plus, so getting your children familiar with their classmates is a great way to tackle their nerves about meeting new kids and friends. One less thing to worry about for your child if they already have friends in class! Therefore, arranging playdates with future classmates is a great way to get the kids comfortable with one another. Socialisation is an incredibly important part of a young child’s development, so giving them a little headstart in that department wouldn’t hurt at all!

Packing Smart
Backpack essentials are another way to comfort your child as they take on their first day. Packing their favourite healthy snack, comfort toy, or something little like Child’s Farm Roll-On Sun Lotion. These are foolproof ways to help your little one navigate their day.
The first day of school isn’t just a big day for your little one, but also for you! Adventures always have a little element of nerves or worry, but just remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel this way and that you are not alone!
