Help these cute cows by going vegan for veganuary

Now that the holidays have passed and January has set in, it’s time to focus on keeping the long list of resolutions that we have set for ourselves. Dieting is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions to make. So why not make a choice that’s good for both you and the planet and join Veganuary?

Veganuary encourages people to help the environment by going vegan for the month of January. Making radical changes to our eating patterns is not easy, so committing to veganism for a month can be a good way to introduce yourself to some alternative eating habits that you might be able to stick to come February.

The Impact of Going Vegan

Animal farming is responsible for 60% of agricultural greenhouse emissions. It is also a major driver of deforestation and the pollution of soil, air and water. Plant-based alternatives are far less damaging to the planet. Going vegan is one of the most impactful things you can do as a consumer to help the environment.

According to Jack Monroe, going vegan for just one day a week can have an astounding impact on the environment. On average it saves:

  • Around 40lbs of grain
  • 1100 gallons of water (the equivalent of almost 4 months worth of showers)
  • 30 square feet of forest

The carbon footprint of a vegan is 50% lower than that of a non vegan.

A vegan diet is also better for your health. A Harvard study found that a vegan diet can reduce your risk of diabetes by 23%. Plant-based diets also reduce your risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. Learn more about veganism and your health here.
